Growing your own is fine when you don’t have someone claiming your little plot of land. Which is what happened to some of my Sweet William and Begonias. Looking out the window I saw one of my own kids digging up that area enthusiastically. Dashing out on my flower saving mission, I was told that they hadn’t flowered yet, so he did not know they were my flowering plants, and in any case, what was more important – food plants, or plants with just empty beauty?
Seriously, though – growing your own food is hugely satisfying, whether your haul is ample enough to distribute among the neighbors or relatives, or whether they are just enough for the family.
You know for sure that no artificial chemicals or fertilizers have gone into building your own healthy edible product, and let’s face it, it is pleasing to have people admire how well they have grown.
So from our teeny plot, we had quite a parade on the kitchen table – besides cucumbers and tomatoes, there were green and red chillies, bitter melon(aka karela), yellow potatoes, sweet potatoes, squash, peppermint, spearmint and sweet peas.
It wasn’t that much effort, and we were still able to disappear to the cottage, because of the quiet help offered by our garden friendly sprinkler and timer. These two together took care of the plants until it we got back for feeding time.
Try it! Growing your own is more simple than it looks, and the results are so well worth it.
